One of Clayton's favorite restaurants just got better...because it's bigger! Jimmy's
Cafe on the Park in DeMun has long been considered one of "the" special places
to go for lunch or dinner. Their original menu has many signature dishes which loyal
patrons return for time-after-time. (For dinner try the Java Tenderloin or Granola
Shrimp.)
As part of the chamber staff review, Owner Jimmy Kristo gave us a tour of the new
addition to the cafe which includes a lounge with a fireplace and a large, comfortable
dining room. The dining room provides additional space for regular diners and is perfect
for private meetings.
Our lunch began with Crash Cakes. Named for the chef, Kathy "Crash" Schmidt,
these variations on crab cakes are a combination of crab meat, scallops and salmon served
with two roasted pepper sauces, one a mild red pepper sauce and the other a yellow pepper
sauce with a light taste of mustard. The best crab cakes you have ever eaten will pale in
comparison.
When we had disposed of every morsel of the Crash Cakes, a heavenly dish of Flash Fried
Spinach appeared. This finger-food includes crispy wisps of fresh spinach leaves,
literally flash-fried and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. You cannot believe how tasty
this inventive appetizer is until you try it. Our salad, the Pear Salad Victoria,
blended slices of fresh pears on a bed of mixed greens with walnuts, gorgonzola cheese and
honey vinaigrette dressing. Yes, it is as good as it sounds.
The Corn Chowder prepared by the day kitchen manager Sharon Cheeks, was creamy and
chunky and absolutely delicious. Sharon prepares all daily specials and soups, and we
swooned over her daily special of Chicken Tortellini in alfredo sauce with mushrooms and
tomatoes. We shared the tortellini and a Salmon Club Sandwich because they were just
too good to keep to ourselves. The Norwegian salmon was grilled to perfection and served
on a freshly baked Kaiser roll with wilted spinach, fresh tomatoes, caramelized onions and
caper mayonnaise. And then...dessert. Yes, dessert in its most decadent, delicious,
worth-running-five-miles-for, form. We shared Death by Chocolate, a thick, rich slab of
fudgy, creamy chocolate and Apricot Cheesecake with granola topping, chocolate crust and
maple sauce, and they were worth gaining a pound (or two).
